It's the difference between being towed and/or an inconspicuous, partly submerged vessel or object. 24.e.iii is the correct rule to reference. Read carefully. |

When the length of the tow exceeds 200 meters, a diamond day shape is used. The logic here is during the day you don’t double the shapes because the length is more easily seen than at night , where you add to the lights when increasing length of tow |

I think this is wrong. Rule 24.g.iv states "a diamond shape at or near the aftermost extremity of the last vessel or object being towed and if the length of the tow exceeds 200 meters an additional diamond shape where it can best be seen and located as far forward as is practicable" |
