| Hello, I have to take an open book test for my renewal of 100 ton license. Also they are making me test for rules of the road. The tests came without any study materials at all. Each question references a number example question 1 (3.6.8.4-13) Im assuming these are references for 33 CFR's? But when I look them up the numbers do not match anything at all. So frustrated the USCG did this to me as I am a working Captain and now I have to deal with this because I made a crucial mistake on my renewal app. and there is no challenge to their decision at all. I read 185 days for last year and I had 199 and thought I was good to go. You need 360 for the past 5 years , which I do have but they say no challenges so basically I screwed myself here. The other work I did was on private vessels which I can not prove and do not have numbers for as some of them have been sold, owners passed away etc. Does anyone know where and how I can look up some sort of reference to these questions? Without this I will most certainly fail the exam and be forced to retire. FML! So unfair is sickening. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. | |

| Ok so today I found that there are modules for the test. Where do I find these modules? Anybody know? Exam Code RNW01 Deck Officer Q164.20 thats as far as I got. Does anyone know where I can find study materials? This should be a big deal for anyone who has a License that does not have enough sea time for the 360 days. This should scare everyone out here. The USCG is eliminating Captains by forcing these exams on them, I also found out that USCG no longer publishes the exams and answers online like they used to. New laws have all but eliminated them. So there is no way I can pass this exam with a pool of 17,000 possible questions. Also found out they put in wrong questions and answers but if you can figure out which ones are wrong you can challenge them? What has happened to the Coast Guard? This is not a game, I am at a critical point of losing my job as a Captain because of these silly rules and exams. Anyone reading this should be very nervous if it happens to you. Whats the difference of a captain with 360 days experience and one with 290 days? Nothing at all. My whole point. Every single Captain I know said they dont remember all of the rules form ten years ago, so why would anyone remember them to a t? This is so un fair and stupid. Ugh and whats worse I can not find a single person who can help me! Anybody?????? This is so frustrating! | |

| Dear SKWS, I'm wondering how it went with your test. Did you find the material? I've been through many renewals since my ticket was issued in 1978. Way back in the 1990's, I procrastinated on my renewal and had to take the whole set of exams all over again. I thought it would be easy, I bought a study book, and practiced. Went to the Coast Guard Base and sat for the test...and failed. Had to go back to retake the sections I hadn't passed...and failed again. They said I could retake those sections I'd missed one more time, so I scheduled another day, re-took the section I hadn't passed....and I failed it. No License. They said I could come back in 6 months or so ( I forget) and take the whole set of exams over again. All of them. Boy was I humbled. I got the study books out, and really worked at those rules. I drew colored pictures and diagrams of all the lights, shapes and sounds. All the passing maneuvers. I discovered that I'd been too confident before, and hadn't really worked at the rules and questions. Finally, I took the whole set of exams all over again, and passed! I'm grateful that I had that review, and I learned to work harder before the tests. Suggestion: get the rule books out and study them; we're supposed to know them. We can do this. I used Bud Gonder's book on Licensing; don't know if it's still avail. Robert Gregory, Captain. | |

| I just recieved the notice to take the test for sea time. It's open book to do at home. The problem is I had enough sea service of the 360 days. I asked to send have the originals back for review and to be signed by the vessel owners. (a first) Any one ever take the home test? 100 MGT Thanks Don |

| I would like to know as well what the reference numbers are on the Exam.I can not match them to anything I can find. I would like to use them for study material |
