| Planning a solo ride through the French countryside this summer, just me and a backpack. I have my license sorted but I have never rented a motorcycle abroad before. What are the insurance requirements over there and do rental shops actually check your riding experience or just hand over the keys? | |

| French rental shops take your riding history pretty seriously, they will want to see a valid motorcycle endorsement and usually a couple of years of experience before they let you take out anything above a 125cc. Insurance wise, third party liability is mandatory and bundled into the rental price by law, but you absolutely want to add the collision damage waiver unless you are ready to cover the full value of the bike out of pocket if you drop it on a mountain pass. You can find solid options to rent a motorcycle in France through aggregators like this one https://getrentacar.com/en-US/motorcycle-rental/france . | |

| Pack a microfiber cloth and a small bottle of visor cleaner in your day bag, not just for bugs. The mist in the Loire Valley and Provence mornings fogs up your visor in seconds, and wiping it with a glove just smears dirt across your line of sight. | |
