INLAND ONLY Vessel "A" is power-driven and overtaking power-driven vessel "B" as shown in illustration D017RR below and will pass without changing course. What signal should vessel "A" sound?
A) one short blast
B) no signal
C) two short blasts
D) one prolonged blast

This question does not specify how far apart the vessels are when overtaking. Unless it's specified that the distance will be less than 0.5 miles, you can't state that sound signals must be made.

Joel's right that the statement of the question doesn't mention the distance separating them. You'd have to deduce from the size of the vessel shapes in the diagram that they're relatively close to one another.

No mention of a narrow channel or fairway.

This isnt a meeting or crossing situation.

No need to mention distance since the question states that vessel "A" is overtaking "B" and it wouldn't be an overtaking situation if they were more than 1/2 a mile from each other.

Narrow channel doesn't apply, this is an inland only question.

Yeah I just assumed it was half a mile, where does it specify in the ROR that "ovetaking" is if CPA is less than 1/2 a mile?
