Rule 34a. The question misleading you by suggesting it's an overtaking situation, which would only apply in a narrow channel. But it's actually two ships in sight of one another and the ship turning starboard is required to sound one short blast. | |

Rule(34) International Waters: Two PDV in sight of one another. One blast means "I am altering my course to starboard." Dead astern insinuates there is a Risk of Collision. The person who said this was written by his 5 year old is valid, but this question does give all the information you need to know for the correct answer. |
